Why have a website? Basically cheap advertising and a very large audience. Global in fact!

This is why it is important to make sure you get the design and information right and accurate. There are too many sites out there that have graphical animation, flashy logos, video content and all sorts of other 'features' which in most cases detract from the content and provide little else than a distraction to the visitor. One of our pet hates is a site that plays music, has an obtrusive background track, or forces you to watch some lame video before you can find the information you are looking for, or even the products that they are trying to sell. Imagine having to watch a video each time before entering your supermarket. How often would you go there?

Another annoyance are sites that continually change for no apparent reason. How many times have you visited a site and upon returning discover that the content has changed and you cannot find what you were looking for? From a programming point of view it may be clever, but the designer probably forgot what the purpose of the site was.

Another point worth noting, and this all too commonly forgotted, is copyright. Not everything on the web is free! That doesn't mean you have to pay for it, you may just have to ask for the authors permission to use it.
